Description: 

The use of the Macy Catheter is an emerging standard of practice in Hospice and Palliative Care for difficult symptom management. In this session, a panel will familiarize the prescriber with the current evidence base for the clinical, quality, and cost comparisons of utilizing the Macy Catheter vs oral, parenteral, and suppository administration. Brad Macy--inventor of the Macy Catheter--will share anecdotal experience of his own and that of other hospice nurses in relation to the challenges of the sublingual route and why the Macy Catheter was invented for this reason.

Objectives:

1. At the end of this course the participant will be able to discuss the evidence on comparative effectiveness and comfort of the Macy Catheter compared to Sublingual and Subcutaneous medication delivery in hospice patients.
2. At the end of this course the participant will be able to list at least 6 common palliative medications that can be given via the Macy Catheter.
3. At the end of this course the participant will be able to discuss the benefits of using the Macy Catheter vs parenteral alternatives in the hospice inpatient and home settings.
