Description: Dr. Kerr and the Hospice Buffalo research team have used an evidence-based approach to study the end-of-life experiences of over 1,400 dying patients and their families, many video-recorded. The talk will review these studies which highlight the characteristics and content of end-of-life experiences as well as their effect on post-traumatic growth. More recent studies have focused on the impact on end-of-life experiences on the bereaved which will also be discussed. Dr. Kerr’s talk will include videos of patients and their families. Dr. Kerr has written a book based on these studies, Death is But a Dream: Finding Hope and Meaning at Life’s End, which was recently released on February 11, 2020, by Penguin Random House.

Objectives:

1. By completion of this presentation the participant will be able to Discuss the Study done by Dr. Kerr and the Hospice Buffalo Team.
2. By the end of the presentation the participant will be able to explain how dreams and visions at the end of life help both patients and families with fears, anticipatory grief and post-death grief.
3. By the end of the presentation the participant will be able to recall at least one patient story and discuss how expression of the experience through the dreams affected the patients outlook of impending death.
