Serious illness and death are extraordinarily difficult for adults to manage – how on earth do we help children and adolescents navigate them? Through thoughtful intention and being present with the child, adults can support children in ways that can be transformational for all. Join us as we address children’s understanding and responses to death, grief and loss at different developmental levels, and explore strategies and activities to help adults talk about loss with children and teens. Given the universality of loss, this webinar will be helpful to professional or family members caring for grandparents, parents, or children themselves, and will be useful whether the child herself is sick, or has a sibling, parent or grandparent who is dying, or has experienced loss through other separation (e.g. divorce or parent’s incarceration).
Objectives
- At the end of the session the participant will be able to discuss the development of children’s understanding of serious illness, death and loss.
- At the end of the session the participant will be able to discuss why talking with children about illness or death is important.
- At the end of the session the participant will be able to verbalize ‘what’ needs to be communicated with children at different ages/developmental stages.
- At the end of the session the participant will be able to discuss 2 strategies and activities helpful in talking with children and teens about death and other loss.
